Kandovan is a touristy village and its fame is due to its troglodyte dwellings and special cone houses which are carved inside rocks. In Kandovan you can witness an exhibition of the hard work of anonymous men reflected in rocks and an unforgettable unique view of history and tradition. Kandovan's mineral water is also popular by visitors and is believed to be a cure for kidney disease.
It is said that there are three villages like this in the world; the other two are in the States and Turkey. But Kandovan is the only one of its kind that still has people living in its houses. The name 'Kandovan' is the plural of 'kandoo' meaning a bee hive. The houses do indeed look like bee hives as they are all triangular in shape. For those who do not know, Kandovan is a collection of houses made in hollow rocks.
Just outside the city you can also see a couple of houses built under ground. There is also a stable near these houses. Though Kandovan is beautiful all year round, spring is the best season to visit this unique city.
When you do go, don't forget to try and buy some dried fruit and different kinds of herbs that are sold in their open markets.
